Should I be concerned?
I would be if it wasn't so bloody pathetic. Jeez, my shop neighbours get worse by the day. Recently they've decided to start parking as close to the front of my car as they can; thankfully, there is usually a car behind me that's left me enough space so I am able to reverse back and pull out. Not that I should have to do so as I park on the very edge of a set of double-yellow lines, however, the Albanians who are taking over my small area of Hampshire, park on the doubles all day, every day, as many vehicles as they like. Our local council do fuck all about it, in fact the other week a traffic warden dared to head up our road, put a ticket on a van that's parked every day; the van moved, for about five minutes whilst the owner of it all got on his phone, ranting and raving to someone, before the van came back, has been there every day since and a parking warden has been nowhere to be seen! I do love how people tell me there is no corruption within our local council!
They themselves, the council, have told me on multiple occasions they cannot fund a parking warden for our area, yet every single day, multiple times each day, a warden will patrol the other parade of shops less than one hundred foot away from us, where he will ticket those who have gone over the two, or four hour limit by mere minutes!
For two years the same group of men harassed my immediate shop neighbour, a lady in her sixties, until she eventually sold her building to them. They told her originally if she didn't sell they would open up the same business next to her to put her out of business so then her building would be worth nothing to anyone else if she decided to sell. Eventually she gave in - I think the constant 2am phone calls got a bit much for her; add to that several of them would go into her shop each day to try and talk her into selling. They were almost at the exchange phase when she was told they would only pay her half "on the books" the rest she would be paid in cash. They pulled out of the sale when she told them her accountant would have never let her take less than the building was worth so she would also have to declare the cash! Another year of harassment followed until she eventually got so ground down she had no choice to but to give in to them. That left just me. The lone female in an area tucked around, surrounded by men who didn't want me here, but who wanted my shop.
Having spent so much of my life being brow beaten by bullies I had finally taken a stand for myself, and wasn't going to let them beat me down.
During lockdown I was here alone, totally alone. It was just me - or at least it should have been. The barbers were cutting hair in the kitchens of the chip shop the other side of me! They were also going out to customers homes to cut their hair. Whilst the rest of the British owned barbers abided by the rules, they never. I sat back and said nothing. Even after someone reported me for being at my shop cleaning - during the first six weeks of lockdown when I wasn't allowed to work and couldn't get flowers anyway as the wholesalers were all closed down - I had two police people arrive at my shop door. I had it open but a stair gate blocking entry with a sign stating I was not able to work, and/or sell to people. Those police people pretty much interrogated me as to why I was at work and what I was doing. One of them then said "What will happen if I open your gate and step through" to which I replied "I'll call the police and have you reported"! This is the same police force who had two police people walk down the alley which runs along the back of my shop during a raid on a building at the end of my shop road which was housing illegal immigrants - all of whom just twenty minutes before the raid happened (as well as the next two raids which were made) had run down the alley jumping over fences into neighbouring gardens. The police people saw my security camera, pointed to it, turned quickly and walked away. I assumed they would come to me for the footage; to this day they've never bothered!
As it was really hot during the Covid-10 pandemic when I was allowed back to the shop I still wasn't allowed to let people in so I would open the back door to try and get some air into the building. Every day for more weeks than I can remember I would go to put the kettle on to find two men standing at the open door entry just staring at me. It got to the stage where I would offer than a cup of tea. They never uttered a word; they just stood there. A couple tried it out the front of the shop, standing and staring in as I worked; I got rid of them quick when I dropped the blinds! So many times they have parked their vehicles on my forecourt, so close to the door I've had to climb over their bonnets to get out of the shop. I never spoke to them (other than the ones at the back) and would ask them to move if they were about, however, I never actively sought them out. There wasn't any point. As much as I won't be bullied or intimidated, I do know what battles to pick. When there were multiples of them and only one of me I had to be wise in my choices.
